Any tips on writing a standout cover letter for government positions? I'm about to apply for a policy analyst role and am unsure how formal my tone should be. In previous applications, I've kept it very professional, but I'm wondering if adding a personal touch about why I'm passionate about public service might help. Does anyone have experience with balancing formality and personality in their cover letters? How did you tailor your approach to make a memorable impression?

You may want to double check the position is still available if this is federal. There is a federal government hiring freeze going on.

Did they ask for a cover letter? Typically the applications are standardized and cover letters, if optional, are totally ignored.

I wouldn't send in a cover letter unless they ask for it. I don't think I ever had to send one in for any role i have applied to honestly. Your resume is generally enough unless they are specifically asking you for a cover letter.

The best advice I received on this was from someone in federal HR. They said your resume is for showing your experience, and your cover letter is for introducing you. So while others mentioned a cover letter is not required, and many don’t submit one… that is a great opportunity to shine through as a real person in a sea of resumes! Certainly keep it professional, but definitely incorporate your personality. Reviewing a pile of resumes can be tedious, I personally always look at cover letters and appreciate when people make it more than a “robotic” professional intro. Hope that helps and good luck!

What certifications are good for technical project manager? I was thinking to start with PSM and PSPO and then move to ITIL, ITSM. Not sure about this though. Not planning to do PMP as I think it’s more waterfall focused. Was also thinking about AWS. Any other certifications recommended?

Any good recommended books on how to build a scalable product and team? I'm looking for recommendations for two areas: 1) in general laying the groundwork in a startup to have the tools and especially processes in place to scale, and 2) tactical focus on building a SaaS project. I've been promoted into a management role from Dev roots, so need to learn more PM processes to be an effective manager in day job, plus would like to start building my own SaaS solution.
