That’s the kind of thing that would make its way around. And probably take you off the shoot and meeting list. At least at my agency
It's still client / company money and you cant keep it a secret so it's not worth the resentment. 'best case' your team is contractually obliged to cover your business class while everyone else does coach and skimps elsewhere and hates you.
Sounds like something you could do client side, but most agencies would laugh at that.
Probably depends on the Level vp. Maybe at EVP level. But not at SVP and below
Ok wow didn’t expect quite the level of hostility given how wretched most Corp travel seems to be but point taken. Geesh
A peer of mine at a former agency did this. Everyone resented him for it
Doesn’t seem worth the hassle unless you are traveling constantly - say weekly/bi-weekly to service a client. In which case it seems like a reasonable topic. Otherwise, it sounds like a bad idea.
Building into your contract is one thing... agree with the above statements, sounds selfish. Building them into your client contracts is another. Particularly for travel over 3 hours, biz class should be a must (for the whole team)! Then build up your points so in the times where biz isn’t allowed, you can upgrade.
So, biz travel (whether for shoots or client visits) is tied to 1) client travel policy and 2) agency travel policy. If client is paying, they tell you how much you can spend and whether you need to fly coach (most cases) or biz (maybe for international travel). And then the agency usually has a preferred airline they travel with. So not sure if you can negotiate that. I guess you could ask. If they say no, they say no.
I worked with a head of marketing who did that. Everyone talked about him like he was an asshole (he was an asshole). So your choice on what to do but chose wisely
Zenith do you not travel often? I know it sounds petulant to you, but if we’re away from home and family for 2 weeks or more it can get downright depressing, especially if your accommodations are sub par. And sometimes the script does call for 2 weeks on location (not a vacation). Don’t be jealous! An extended stay at Casa Del Mar is really not as fabulous as it sounds. But it certainly helps with the morale of the team.
Doesn’t necessarily need to be Biz class vs coach. Could be preferred hotel or airlines. Just wondering if it’s something there’s openness too or it’s just ‘Yeah, nice try’ right away
We'd all like to fly first class or private! Maybe you should ask for an additional 100k a year to fund your travel preferences yourself. Think they'll sign off on that?
Your biggest variables will be salary and maybe some flexible work from home privileges. I don't know how senior a marketing director is but if it is junior to an SVP you don't have as much leverage as you will later.
Seems like a weird thing to have in writing for a specific individual.
Zenith when you’re on the road for two weeks at a time, a nice hotel is important. Maybe not for once a year trips, but if it’s much of what you do, it staves off the pains of business travel like you wouldn’t believe
Zenith to that I would just say that being comfortable is an important part of the creative process. I know that sounds like a spoiled person speaking, but it’s true
It can totally be done, after all it’s called business for a reason.
I’ve heard of people who did this but if the client contract says coach only, they’ve been stuck in coach
My last two accounts don't even reimburse travel OOP. This is a contentious topic I'd stay away from unless as others mentioned you're traveling long haul and every week. The best thing I was able to do was to buy my own tickets within the approved price limits and get reimbursed later, outside the company travel system we are obligated to use, it was done on the DL and I reported to CEO so could get away with it. At previous agency I had to go NYC-SF constantly and the only "perk" was to fly direct, but they'd want you to get a layover if cheaper. Idiotic.
