Do small law firms have paralegal managers?
Although Amazon has instituted a hiring freeze and layoffs are probably on their way, I went through the loop for a security engineer position at AWS. Before I attended the final interviews, Amazon placed the hiring freeze and called me to ask if I wanted to go ahead or cancel my application. I decided do go ahead Right now I'm waiting for their response and the position I applied to changed from "under consideration" to "no longer under consideration". Thoughts?

They have a terrible reputation - mostly because they have made their business by being a large regional agency in a market that constantly refills itself with new college graduates as well as not having a lot of local alternatives for employees to jump to.
They also have the weirdest non-compete document they never bring up until after you have accepted the job…unless you know to inquire about it yourself. The non-compete policy forbids employees from working for any other ad or marketing agency in the same state for one full year following resignation or termination.
Avoid this place unless you know for a fact you will not work for another agency in TN immediately after you have finished with Tombras.
It’s a old school mentality in a small, local market it dominates because it is full of recent college grads always looking for that first job and unknowingly limiting their options for their second job. This practice should be more than enough to stay away…it says everything about the company, culture, it’s leaderships, etc.
Exactly. I heard about this policy so when I was interviewing I inquired about it. They were shocked I knew about it…apparently they like to spring it on people during the “paperwork phase” of your new employment.
Once I expressed my concern about it, they stopped communicating with me…as in ghosted. But that’s my experience.
Like someone else said, the non-compete may not hold up in court and may just be a scare tactic…but asks yourself why they need to do this? Direct competition I understand as that is normal. But Tombras has been able to do this because they have been a big fish in a small pond (market). It’s arrogance.
Times are changing…but if you apply and get interviews I advise you to inquire about the non-compete and ask to see if it before you are too deep into the process.
I’ve heard good things from a past coworker that works there. The only negative really is that Knoxville is a very small market. Nashville has a lot more opportunities on the creative side
Most people are remote! Pending if you are a good fit location doesn’t really matter. Agency is great! It has an agency feel but because it is independent there are less politics involved and more room for growth.
I have not heard good things.
Yeah I should have specified. I haven’t heard anything especially bad, just that the work is not good.
creatives that work there say it's very boring

Yeah if you move there, you better realllllly like Tombras, because there’s nowhere else in town to work if it doesn’t pan out

I’d also just be careful that you’re suuuuper happy with the offer they give you, because when you’re the only shop in town, you don’t have to give people raises or promotions to keep them from going to an agency down the street - they literally have no other options to leave so they’re forced to stay or move. (Speaking from experience working at GSD&M back when it was the only shop in austin.)
I’ve heard it’s great pay but not good work at all… interviewed there but got cold feet about moving to Knoxville just in case I hated it.
Also have heard it’s super unorganized. But Knoxville seems like a cool city!
Thanks. How was the interview process when you went through?
Thinking I might put in for a couple positions, then try to feel out during interviews.
Would you be willing to make a introduction with your friend working there?
Worked there about 4 years ago. New beautiful office so don’t worry about the post about being crammed in basements, that was the case when I was there though. Knoxville is great if you are open to a small city.
Things were really disorganized, and as a low/mid level creative there was no opportunity to move up. The creative directors mostly didn’t pull their weight and it affected the process even more because they relied on a lot of junior talent.
Can’t totally speak to the account side of things, it really depends on the client and team overall. Account really seemed to have the power to control deadlines and client expectations.
I’m not sure about sales really, they had a guy who has since retired but he always gave me creepy vibes so I stayed away. There was never really a shortage of projects going on, mostly aor stuff.
The noncompete was probably the worst thing about working there. They gave it to me blindly after I moved 8 hours to Knoxville and had been working there for a week already. Mine was waaay worse than the 1 year in the state of TN, (200 miles from any of their offices, at the time there were only 4) but it’s pretty standard now for it to only be 1 year in TN. I definitely lied about where I was going when I left because, but I was so low level they didn’t care about me. With remote work there are ways around it now, and the language of them seems to change every couple of years too. But it’s definitely a trash thing to have, it probably wouldn’t hold up in court.
I interviewed there about 5 years ago and it was just too all over the place. They were growing so fast, people working in basements, converted high school gyms, everything was a mess and I just couldn’t get my head around it. I’m sure it much different/better now and would be very interested to see it.
I have heard that about this agency years ago. Seems like some of that has matured since then. Looks like they have a new building and a bit more internal structure to bring some order to the chaos.
