In theory: a 22 yr old raised on youtube, who already bought a nice camera and Final Cut so the agency doesnt have to pay for it, and will use it to shoot and edit long form social videos for the agency for cheap (for “the exposure”), and hasnt been “spoiled” yet by ideas like unions, and job descriptions, and overtime.
In practice: a 50+ year old dude with a ponytail in a Hawaiian shirt and sandals, who has an old camera and an edit bay he’ll use to make whatever the hell you’re talking about, and not give a shit about unions or job descriptions or overtime, as long as you dont mind that he’s kind of drunk.
LOL.
I think it usually applies more to social media. Someone who can come up with the idea and execute it on their own via photography or video. And knows a bit about post production, too. Kind of a one man/woman band.
Correct. Some are just better at it than others. And some get paid to do it.
You are! I am! We all are!
💯
are you a maker? do you have hard skills that allow you to execute creative? animation/edit/shooting
In my experience content creators concept the work from scratch often with some or little help from Creatives who may or may not be scoped on the job. They are more technical than traditional producers because they will shoot and cut it themselves. Any job description from Hearst, Huffington Post or Condé Nast will be a good reference. These shops basically want 1 person to do 6 jobs.
It’s usually someone who executes creative but can also be someone who concepts. I’m a shooter/editor but I have colleagues who are editor/animators, photographer/editors, writer/designers, writer/editors, etc. The projects are almost always for social and digital-only, and the deadlines are usually really tight. I work hard and I care about my craft, just like everyone else.
These days it covers everything for every medium. All encompassing. It’s all good.
I’m content creating right now... words, more words, something meaningful like potpourri and likable like puppies. Also, it’s a catchall term for people who produce shit. As in, someone go get the plunger for me, some content creator just clogged the branding toilet again!
Bigger, traditional agencies don’t usually have them as they/we are too siloed. (So don’t understand the title)
Helps to have started out on TVC. That translates into everything across platforms. Tech specs may differ, but creating content hasn’t changed.
On a side note, why are people in advertising so judge-y when it comes to titles? 🤔
I think it depends. I’ve seen good social media work and I’ve seen awful TV work. The medium isn’t as much of a factor as the client and/or the creatives. But agree on the budget squeeze.
A mindset.
