Though I tend to be more of a explore on my own traveler, some destinations are better suited for a tour. Africa is one of them. I did a safari in Tanzania and can’t imagine trying to do that trip on my own.
I echo this. I am introverted and hate group travel, but my wife and I went through a group travel company for our honeymoon to Kenya. In retrospect, I never would have done that on my own.
I went to Africa on a 2 week Contiki trip and it was the best decision ever. They planned it all out and all I did was show up. Definitely look into the group trips!
I second contiki also!! Had the best time!
Did a group tour in Morocco. Was a great experience. Tour guide was super charismatic and always made sure my SO and I were tended to. Also really great since the tour guide was able to translate the French and Arabic that I had very limited knowledge of.
The one caveat is that we were super lucky in that we had the 10 seater van all to ourselves until we got to the destination with the rest of the groups.
Morocco Joy Travel! Ask for Ali
I like small group tours for countries where major attractions are spread out or if safety is a concern. Pro - logistics are taken care of. Con - itinerary may not match exactly what you want to do but there are so many tour operators out there these days that one is bound to have one that is pretty close
+1 I have traveled extensively solo in Southeast Asia and South America, but tagged onto a group tour to visit India. Would do the same for parts of Africa.
Group tours are actually great for safety measures, reducing costs and alleviating stress of planning and figuring out logistics. The only reason not to do a group tour is if you have been to the destination before and/or the itinerary is not really what you want to do. They typically don’t give you an option to go on your own so you might get stuck doing things you don’t want to.
I’m leading a group tour next May (Giraffe Manor — I can hardly wait!!) and think escorted is the best idea for Africa. There are too many variables to try to plan it out separately. I’m a travel agent as well if you need to bounce supplier ideas off me. Not soliciting business - just offering my knowledge!
Thanks everyone! This is extremely helpful and helped alleviate my concerns. Does anyone have any tour operators they recommend or ones to stay away from? We see a great itinerary on GoAhead Tours we like but never tried booking a trip like this and not sure where to turn.
I went through Gate1 travel for our Kenya honeymoon trip. They did a great job.
I have had awesome experiences with Tauck but they aren’t cheap. When traveling with just my wife we usually go on our own and we enjoy planning everything out that is important to us. When traveling with larger groups/extended family I find tours to be really great in that a defined itinerary takes any hassle out of trying to plan an itinerary while managing everyone’s own preferences - and you get to learn a ton from your guides without having to do a lot of research on your own.
Uganda 🇺🇬 is currently under a 42 day Covid lock down. I would check the Kenyan news daily before booking a trip.
Check out Adventures for Solos. She always has a few African trips. Group is more active and fun say than a Gate 1.
I have been all over the world independently but Africa is the place for a tour, particularly on safari. The driving can be scary and a tour will stop at the right places on any road trips, plus take care of you on safari / make sure you see the best wildlife, etc.
Abercrombie & Kent did a great job. Yellow Zebra is good too
