Empathy and Enabling are not punch words and they aren’t mutually exclusive. You can have empathy and still have solid boundaries and firm limit setting. Both can be true.
Just like the validation of feelings is not the same as believing everything one say, or that the students don’t need to be accountable for the actions.

Agreed!
No. I have empathy for students who were not well prepared for my class. I have empathy for students who don't have support at home, etc. But that doesn't mean a free pass. You still have to act correctly and do the work. Most of the teachers I know are the same, and the ones who aren't didn't recently change to have "fake empathy."

This is true empathy. The way it is supposed to be. The way most of us are. The way some try to be. Your boundaries are spot on. This is how to do it. Fake empathy has no boundaries.
I have had to adapt so far away from the way I would like to be and the way I feel would be best for my students just to keep my job and stay out of the office. After all, I have empathy for myself too.
That’s so sad to hear. What a bummer
