It's the "default job" these days.
It's what you do for the team and if managers recognize your accomplishments. Volunteer and tackle more tasks and of course there are unwritten rules such as playing politics which alot of people hate. You may have witnessed those getting promoted are not worthy but it's the politics of it.
No I believe you need to get more complex tasks or diversity in your work to get promoted to next level. Like solution architect or enterprise architect by learning and implementing some cloud technologies.
There is nothing wrong with being a Sr for most of your career. If you want to get to the next level though, you need to increase your scope and impact. Leading company wide initiatives that have significant impacts in some key metric will give you the visibility from Sr leadership that is required to make the jump.
I don’t believe this at all. Either you are lying or you are going about it in the wrong way. If you go to your managers with an idea that will benefit the company, it is a risk to their credibility not to allow you to implement it. Additionally, why would they disallow something that would make their lives easier? Try to build something that they can directly use. An example of this, is that previously I created a slackbot that helped with resourcing as this was a pertinent issue for managers. Doing this made their lives easier, made me look good and ultimately earned me a promotion. If nothing else, focusing on this, with time, should earn you a promotion.
I went from a SWE to EM in 3 years. I’d say it’s totally up to the initiatives you start owning. Emphasis on the word “own”. You need to show that you can handle the responsibility of architecting the design as well as strapping on leading and mentoring other engineers.
In short, you need to clarify your value and be transparently eager to take on either a managerial role or a higher SWE position.
