As a junior associate, would it be better to work in an office where my practice group is stronger (in numbers, prestige, etc.) or live in a city I love but where the practice group is very small?

I chose the latter. I'm liking it

This question depends entirely on what is important to you. Are you someone that prioritizes being at the top of your field or are you comfortable in a lesser recognized role but maybe happier in your day to day life

like

Probably depends on how open they are to work remotely with you. In non-Covid times I would have recommended to hang out at the bigger office regularly to get to know the people.

Doesn't matter if the group is small if you like the partners and they have strong books. But do think about how limited exit opps might be in the smaller situation.

City

It completely depends on what is going to make you the happiest. No matter where you go you will be working a lot. So you are going to want to like the people you work with.

I will say that I stayed in a small city that I love and I’m glad I did because I have really needed the support system of my family and friends to get me through my first year of practice. It would have been much harder to start this career in a new city. But I also don’t have big aspirations to make partner at a top firm. I want to do interesting work, but have time for life as well. So if your values are more career-focused a bigger city is better

I’m currently a 2nd year associate in commercial finance. I’ve realized I don’t enjoy a a strictly transactional practice. I enjoyed litigation matters as a summer (particularly the adversarial nature). Also, love talking and advising clients. I don’t want the litigation lifestyle and appreciate the in-house opportunities of transactional. Assuming that I could switch (or lateral), I’m thinking I may enjoy employment (and the ability to defend and train/advise). I appreciate any insight.

It's super frustrating to be "time poor".

That's seemingly just the nature of working in Biglaw.

But every day you have the option to buy back your time.

How do you buy back time?

It's simple—by saving and investing.

And you don't need to be uber wealthy to regain control of your time.

I’m chatting with a partner next week about other offers I have from similar top tier firms and whether my current firm can match the signing bonus that I have been offered. I would stay at my current firm if they offer me the same. What is the best way to bring this up in a way that’s most effective and non-offensive?

1st year. I have a decent amount of client email/phone interaction. One partner frequently asks me to communicate with clients, and the partner tells me to ask if I have any questions before emailing the client.

I almost always respond to the partner with my thoughts and ask partner whether P agrees with my thoughts, prior to emailing client. At what point should I be skipping that step and just email client? I’m worried about making a mistake, but most of the time P agrees with my “draft”
