I interviewed with Firm A months ago and accepted a position to start this upcoming fall. Group leader called me to offer the position back in November 2020. Besides interviewing with partners at the firms, and diligent follow ups notifying them of my interest to get started, no communication has transpired since. It turns out that I accepted a better offer w/ Firm B for personal reasons and won’t be going to Firm A. What is the best way to notify Firm A? Call/email group leader? Call/email HR?
Name and shame the firms doing stealth lay-offs.

How did you bring up the conversation with the partner?
Talk to the partner like your asking a question about the firm even if it may be their decision. “I’ve been offered x at y. Of course I want to stay here, but this amount is to hard to pass up for [insert excuse]. Do you think THE FIRM would match something like that? I know I need to talk to someone about it, just not sure who. How would you go about it?” Then see what they. At the end of the day, its not personal and your making a rationale business decision (the partner would do the same without thinking twice) so just present it as such.
I’d say something like “I want to stay but it’s hard for me to turn down the opportunity to put a down payment on a house/payoff student loans/support my spouse go to grad school/help my parents with healthcare expenses etc.
I have noodled about this and decided I would be very honest. “I like being on this team bc xyz, but when a down payment for a home is on the table, it’s hard to pass up.”
