None of us are as motivated and hard-charging as we were in our early 20s. Some of that is from hitting ceilings, but a lot of it is just part of getting older. Once you're reasonably comfortable, your priorities change. Now that promotion isn't nearly as important as being home every night with your kids is. Nothing wrong with it as long as you're genuinely happy with where you are in life.

That really resonates! I agree a lot of it comes with age and getting more settled, not just career ceilings. I think the hard part is figuring out whether the shift comes from genuine contentment or from quietly adjusting expectations.
Could be a bit of both
I got about as far as my employer was willing to let me get. I wanted more, but performance evaluations started getting more and more picky and demanding. Wages were stagnant. But every year I was given more and more highly valued projects and trusted with 75% of the day to day management of a global portfolio. The pay and title no longer fit the job I was doing. I became more and more frustrated as time went by. I finally realized that I was making more per year by double in the market than at the job. That’s when I decided to retire early. I hear my replacement is struggling which makes me kinda happy. Serves them right.

That kind of situation can really wear you down over time. When effort keeps increasing but recognition doesn’t, it’s hard not to feel stuck or undervalued. But hey congrats on retiring early! That’s a big achievement and proof that all those years of hard work paid off!!
