You can't really have one without the other. Without science democracy couldn't happen because there would be no common language and belief system. And without democracy, science would be an esoteric thing you learn about in universities but can't apply to the real world (largely because of that divide in beliefs). They are inextricable I think.
I think they should hire more experts to advise on legislation. I don't think it's the will of the people to have ignorant people decide on matters they don't understand
It's always a bit disappointing to see out-of-touch, elderly politicians decide on matters that will shape our future without any knowledge of the subject
Democracy is incredibly important, but relies on voters making informed decisions to work correctly. When you have undereducated populations and politicians happy to use manipulation and outright lies, you end up in the situation we have in the US. Suddenly democracy is pushing out science instead of being informed by science, and that's terrifying.
I have not known of a dictatorship with a transparent scientific process, and I don't think I ever will.
When dictatorship exists, science focuses on supporting the dictatorship to stay in power. There is no other mission than that.
