As super ambitious person I expect not everyone is ambitious as I am but having direct reports for a few years now I am shocked how people are NOT at all ambitious. I am initiating conversations on career plans, promotions etc. but I get nada mostly. They are happy with their roles and projects. Is this normal or am I a bad manager? So far I had only one highly motivated employee who I helped to get a promotion but she is the only one.

Not a reflection of you as a manager. People are different and have different priorities in life, which can always change. I used to be very ambitious but now i just want the paychecks to pay my bills, and go home play with my kids. I dont need a promo to feel happy with my life. Nothing wrong with that.

Thank you for your response. I just feel some people expect promotion from every performance cycle but they do not do anything to get it. Something like “ I work here X number of years why I am not getting a promotion”. Uhm…so I am trying to understand where this misunderstanding comes from.

I've seen a mixed bag, some want to move up, others are happy where they are. For most, it depends on where they are in their personal life (for example, young children, spouses work). Some are just happy in their current roles and we work together on having them grow within their role. Mentoring others, being an SME, onboarding others, etc.

I was not ambitious in my work life, just needed the paycheck to fund my entrepreneurial projects. Corporate life comes with a lot of office politics and that’s just not a fit for some people. My last boss took my lack of ambition personal and sabotaged me. All I wanted was to do my job and be left alone. Please don’t impose your style people have different goals.

Thank you for your feedback. Not imposing anything just trying to be a good manager. I understand everyone has different priorities but as a manager I also want to make sure my reports are not in the wave of layoffs. If no one knows them besides me, they for their job not showing any interest in a company upper management will be targeting them for the next round of layoffs. I may be a manager but honestly I do not have much authority.

I think that it is a common misconception that all employees should want to move up. Some are happy where they are and are content to learn, grow and STAY where they are. It should not be looked at negatively. You have content employees, it’s a win!

I have a query. Offer agreement states that termination can be initiated from either party by giving 3 months prior notice or equivalent pay.
