I think they would have mixed feelings. As to the Constitution, the balance of power, how each branch is set up and functions, the amendments, the Electoral College, etc, I think they would be extremely pleased of their creation and how it remained the foundational document as our country expanded. I believe they would also look at things in the 20th Century and beyond in bewilderment thinking “we didn’t foresee that!” I believe that they would be disappointed in the Civil War, that their actions regarding slavery wasn’t enough, but proud of our recovery and rebuilding as a nation. Overall, I agree with your student that, in spite of our flaws and issues, we are still trying to “form a more perfect union,” and we are better.

Really well said and thought out, thank you!
I hope we are still able to celebrate
America’s Birthday by the time we have the 300th…… for that matter even 5 years from now. I don’t see how when we have candidates or congressmen that are not standing for American values- I don’t see the “ better “……. It makes me feel concerned- ( my opinion )

Thank you for sharing your opinion. It is a very valid one - scary times on the horizon for sure.
They would love that our foundations have stuck. They would love that the Americans still have the BoR and utilized them. Just like your student it is even better than when it started. I love this country and it is the greatest in the world. Here are 2 quotes from one of our founding father and one of my favorites. Benjamin Franklin’s most famous quote regarding the United States was spoken at the close of the 1787 Constitutional Convention. When asked by a citizen whether the new nation would be a republic or a monarchy, Franklin famously replied: "A republic, if you can keep it."Franklin also frequently used the philosophical quote, "Where liberty dwells, there is my country," to express his devotion to a free nation.

Love those two quotes. The founds get a lot of flack from some that I find very unwarranted. They loved liberty and they sacrificed so much to bring America to pass
I think they would be appalled

I think in some ways you're right.
Appalled. Elaborate please. Where is your hope, faith and belief in our country “under one God”? She is not perfect, but I believe in her role in the world to do good.
