I’d rather have a bonus. I don’t like the idea of tying compensation to OT hours. I’d rather encourage people to be efficient and work less/smarter. And then reward people for the overall hard work, and quality deliverables.
The reward for working more efficiently is more free time, but if overtime is built in to the business model then it should be paid. Getting a bonus at the end of the year is a poor replacement for actually getting paid for the hours you worked and bonuses can and will be taken away at the first sign of trouble in the market even if the company is doing well.
I worked at an accounting firm that pays overtime (1.5x salary) if you have over 40 hours per week. Needless to say it was good WLB (because they don't want to pay overtime, so work get spread out evenly), but base salary was lower. In the end, it was around or slightly less than market rate.
If base salary is competitive, I will take 1.5x overtime on each paycheck instead of an annual bonus check because if I quit early, I don't get the bonus. :P
