I think it depends on a few things. Some people are never satisfied and define themselves through their advancement, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Other people are motivated to reach a level of comfort and stability so they can provide a comfortable life for their family, and then enjoy their family and WLB. There is nothing wrong with that either.
I was a teacher and a coach and driven to become a head coach. I busted my rump and reached it at 35. About the same time I started a family. I loved coaching, but with my family my priorities changed and I had to give up coaching. While I miss it, I would never trade coaching for more time with my kids.
When I changed careers I had to get back into hustle mode for a time because I was not even out earning my teaching salary at first. Now I am established and way out earning my old career. Now I am in my 50s and find myself going into glide mode over growth mode.
There is an advisor I know that is my same age and still trying to build his practice into the next Raymond James, and no matter how big he gets he will never stop because that is who he is. We are different and define success differently, and that is OK.
Just know yourself and what makes you happy, because we only get to go through this adventure once, and it is too short not to chase your happiness.
Amazing advice!! Thank you for sharing :)
No, I want to advance my career. The thought of more financial stability drives me.
At a level where I’m not sure the next step up will be worth it. The time and stress for the money, I mean. I’m doing well, and I still get to have some life outside. Not entirely sure yet, but it's a good point. The higher up you go, the fewer openings there are.
Yeah I feel similarly. I like my work life balance right now and I’m able to save quite a bit which has been nice
Yes found the same!
I think it depends on your situation. I know people who want to retire at 50. At 40 they got disenfranchised with corporate America and are now aggressively saving to get out in 6 years.
I think when it comes to advancing there's a hollowness to it unless your a narcissist. I want to advance for financial reasons but I personally enjoy the grind, not the climb.
I sometimes feel that way, and it may be a function of the old saying that familiarity breeds contempt. I'll look at people in higher positions and wonder if I really want to be like them. Those thoughts are generally resolved when I remind myself that I would like to be earning the money they're making.
