I think they value prestige more than size. So working at a hot AI startup is probably more valuable than experience at IBM despite the name brand and size. But IBM is better than a random IT place
Agreed it’s 100% not size…it’s brand value
after going into this twice, I feel GSB places more emphasis on prestige (in terms of whether you have wow factor) than HBS. HBS is happy to take traditional industry, down to earth profiles than GSB. Maybe it’s because of the class size at GSB
Idk about HBS but Stanford GSB. Yes. Absolutely.
Yes they all do
Yes definitely
What about if salary is bigger at smaller shop
Probably not. But if at a smaller place, your impact and what you did matters a lot
You can kind of think of the value they place on your employer the same way a future employer would - it’s often about brand cachet unless you’re planning to stay in the niche you find yourself in already. They don’t care if you got paid more if they don’t know who it is.
So like a PE fund vs a traditional investment bank? Which do u think
How about you actually tell us what your situation is and we can offer less abstract advice
I’m at HBS and there is a big mix, but definitely skews toward well known names. But don’t forget the trade off there is that you’re completing with all the ppl who applied from where you worked. So if there are 200 ppl applying from the same firm they probably have a ballpark number of ppl they want to accept from that one place. Bottom line is don’t get caught up in that bc I don’t think it matters all that much
