Can someone explain how firms get away with elevating first years to second year associates without paying us like it until the new year? I know it’s probably a matter of contract or fiscal years or whatever but I am still annoyed. If I’m going to get the elevated expectations, I expect elevated pay 😭

Don’t worry there’s no elevated expectations yet. They still think you know nothing.

Good! Bc that is def still true

You are a second year in name only so as not to confuse you with the stub year. They don’t change your bill out rate until your salary changes. That’s what you get paid on. Calm yourself. Your class started in January, you haven’t even practiced a year yet.

It's a policy. You're at-will.

Promotions before end of year are more like "congrats, you didn't get fired" bc the stuff that matters takes effect the beginning of fiscal year.

I… what? There’s no elevated expectations. It’s just that there are brand new firsties with zero experience so now you have to be called second years. Hopefully you are better at the job than them.

In an awful funk today. I’ve gotten 0 things done and it’s past 5 😥. Good thing my partner was busy and (hopefully) didn’t notice.

The prospect of doing this (or any other gig) for another 30+ years absolutely paralyzed me. If it weren’t for my wife & family, I think I would have put in my 2 weeks today & booked tickets to Mexico to live out my days on savings.

I have it better than most folks, so I feel like such a prick even typing this…Thanks for listening to my dumb rant/confession.

Pre bonus and equity I earn 110k/yr in Wash DC.
I’ve seen 33% net income, but honestly $1650/mo CANT even get a 500sqft condo on rent.
30% gross is $2750/mo 😱
Others say I can afford 600k houses but that seems irresponsible and ridiculous.
My current rent is $1750 for a small 1bd1ba (cheap) but I’m sacrificing my safety in my neighborhood. No frills apt.

Just gave notice and I feel so bad for the partner I work for. He now has no associates on his team (the other left a few months ago) and it has nothing to do with him, it’s just that the firm refuses to pay associates enough ($100k below market). He was an amazing mentor to me and I feel so torn up about this. Just needed to vent.

Is being put on a case that is heading to trial seen as a prestigious thing in biglaw? Do partners look at associates who have trial experience as a cut above the rest? Or as associates with partner potential? … Or is it not that glam and literally just a work horse designation lol.
