CapM junior associate here. I feel that BigLaw has completely taken over my life and I need a reset. Tips on how to build a sustainable routine/schedule for working out, eating better, sleep, work, personal/family time?

Outsource as much as possible (e.g., meal delivery service and cleaning). Then, pick one area to focus on before you build in the rest. I recommend sleep! If you can’t control working late, start sleeping in until the last possible moment in the morning (I had previously been straining myself to log in by 7:30am and not a single person has cared that I now log in by 9am, barring emergencies).

Rotate to a new practice area.

Agree with the advice to switch groups if you are still able to. I am a third year in capm. Really don’t see how any group could be worse. Expected to work and respond within minutes from 7 am to 2 am on the average day (including holidays and weekends). Frequent all nighters. You know it’s bad when you have to check in with your supervisors to tell them you will be away from your desk for 30 min to get food at 10 pm on Friday.

I felt this so hard as a fist year who was working in high yield CapM. Moved to M&A and my life dramatically improved. It’s still the drizzling shits but I don’t fantasize about jumping off my building anymore.

I always thought M&A was the worst! Would appreciate if you could elaborate how it’s been better for you compared to your time in DCM.

Which companies have best WLB, least stressed DS/DA roles? I’ve been suffering from some immunology issues and stress from work would worsen it, therefore I want to move to a company/role with good benefit (esp. healthcare) and great WLB (little chance of PIP, etc). Doesn’t have to be high-paying, as long as it can support my life (single) and long-term medical cost. Thanks in advance.

Also, how involved are you REs? I’ve been through 2 retrievals now, but feel kinda in the dark still on a lot of things. Some of the nurses are hit or miss and if I want to talk to my doctor I have to schedule a consultation and its typically a 2 week wait.

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)

Let’s talk speed reading. I’m a slow reader and listened to a podcast recently on speed reading. I’m intrigued. Who here speed reads? How did you learn those skills, and what types of documents do you speed read in practice? I do mostly litigation and am thinking that speed reading would help with research but maybe not things like doc review where you need to review for both responsiveness and privilege.

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?
