Company just mandated 5 days in office starting March. Marketing Coordinator, $78K salary.
My math: $450/month commute costs ($5,400/year) + 12 hours weekly = 600+ hours annually. That's essentially working for $13/hour just to get to my $37/hour job.
No raise offered. No adjustment for inflation. Just "collaboration" talk while half my meetings are still Zoom with distributed teams.
How are others handling RTO mandates? Are companies offering any compensation for the commute hit?

I'm currently interviewing for a remote role for a company based in NY.

The thing is I'm based in a different city (southern U.S.)

My question is:

When it comes time to talk compensation, should I base the market rate for the role on my city of residence or NY?

Would it make sense to ask them directly how they determine comp for NY-bases vs. other city-based employees?
