To be honest I don’t think anyone really knows.
No reason why people shouldn’t learn. It’s pretty amazing stuff, one of the key underpinnings of how our capitalist society works
Thick book but intelligent investor is a good start to understanding market fluctuations and psychology behind fundamental financial theory
A random walk down wall st by malkiel is pretty digestible and you can read it in one week.
Takeaway: financial markets are just a guessing game
All you really need to know as an investor is to understand your short term liquidity needs and for longer term needs, invest regularly in low fee diversified equities (like index funds) with a goal of getting close to the market rate of return.
Does anyone have something digestible that gets into each of the different products? Something that will help me understand like total return swaps ... fronting ... hybrid derivatives?
I’d start with basic economic theory, equity and fixed income fundamentals and then maybe options and swaps.
