Pros: Flexibility. Potentially better pay. Being selective about work.
Cons: No insurance or benefits. Inconsistent pay. Hard to plan. Provide your own equipment. No sick days.
If you’re the sole or major breadwinner, it’s extremely anxiety-producing. If your family could thrive off your partner’s salary and yours is just gravy, then go for it! You’ll be very happy.
In my ideal world I’d still help pay the bills while having time off and keep kids in daycare. Possible? Oh yeah and lose the baby weight 😂
This is my life rn. Get your gym on Mom.
I’ve been freelance for years. If your partner provides the benefits, it’s an awesome way to go. I’m able to keep working, but usually on my terms so I have never felt like I’ve missed anything with my kids. You just have to be prepared for the spikes and dips in income. My rule of thumb is to save half of everything I make, so I’m always prepared for the dips. Good luck!
Pros: having control and flexibility is awesome.
Cons: missing time with your kids. Work will always be there if you want it.
How does that work? Here in NYC childcare isn’t flexible. If I wanted to do freelance for 2 months, then take off, then work again...it’d be really tough to find high quality childcare that would work with an on/off schedule. It took being on the waiting list for 6 months to get my kid in the daycare we wanted (here you have to start looking when you are pregnant). Not sure we could afford childcare during the time off, plus independent insurance.
