Curious thought—Has anyone successfully managed two full time jobs?
How did you do it? What do you wish you knew before you decided to give it a shot?

I did it twice. Once as a college student and I needed to survive cost of living and paying tuition, etc. and the second time to attempt again 10 years older (to see if I could for one, but also, ran into a financial situation that required me to get a second job).

I don’t recommend it as it runs a person thin. My boss at the other company thought I was insane. And well the day job, I was the boss. But I did let my regional manager know what I needed to do at that time. I was transparent and I lucked out he was supportive so long as my main priority was still my position as the branch manager and the night job was second priority.

There’s multiple schedules to consider and it creates time constraints for shifts at both jobs. I did a full 8 hrs in a daytime job then drove to my second job to do another full 8. (5am-1:30pm) then (2:30pm-10:30pm) each with 30min breaks). I had to consider making sure I wasn’t in the same industry (conflict of interest), and I had enough time between jobs to take a break for myself. Logistics-wise I had to make sure the second job was closer to home so I could get home in time to unwind a bit then straight to bed and start all over again. Another thing to consider is if one job runs overtime you have to be prepared to find a way to work it out with both companies.

One thing I worked out with both companies was an overlap of the 5 days I worked so that I always had 2 days off during the week. You need that balance.

Again I don’t recommend it. I eventually made the second job a part time gig instead and even doing that was exhausting. I do however, recommend doing side hustles (something you enjoy, selling on Etsy, or investing) that way it’s on your time and no obligation to show up to another company after you have mentally exhausted yourself in your day job.

Hope this experience helped give a little perspective!

Oh it was two completely different industries not even remotely related to the other lol (since I did it for financial reasons not work experience since they were unrelated industries but it’s great learning new things no matter where you go). Main reason my supervisor and HR were ok with it at my main company. I made sure of that. I chose to be transparent out of respect for both bosses but it’s up to you. You don’t have to share but just make sure they don’t interfere with each other. You have to give 100% to both companies. Also, the second company did not pay me a salary anywhere near the first company (it was significantly lower). I took whatever they could offer in exchange for negotiating the schedule.

When I informed my to-be second boss, it was because I would only be available certain hours (second half of the day only and Saturday if needed) because I had to run my branch during the day. She agreed and observed me during the probationary period very thoroughly because we weren’t sure if mentally and physically it could be done but I fought through it. I never sacrificed my ability to do both jobs. But both bosses told me if one job affects the other I’ll have to give one up or come up with an alternative plan because my first job was my primary job and main source of income. I lucked out because I had very good bosses.

So I think it depends on your relationship with your current boss and how much you’re willing to share. Some will advise you not to say anything because it might affect your current position if the jobs are similar in any way. I’d check if you have any employee assistance programs first to help you financially if you can. Maybe look into trying part-time first to see if it’s something you can handle. If you can juggle 20 hrs plus 40 hrs without burning out then go for the 40 hrs plus 40 hrs. I won’t lie I died a little on the inside but the people I worked with at both sides kept me going. So that helped.

If one is remote, that’s helpful. But if the expected work hours are at the same time, that’s helpful will be conflicting for sure. Maybe see if you can work during hours outside your current schedule or part time or if you’re able to make your own schedule as long as you hit the 40?. Sometimes there are ways to make it work. But like I said, it’s up to you how transparent you want to be with both employers. I have to sign off for now. Best of luck to you!

Two full time jobs with presumably the same working hours? We fired the last person who tried that because:

1. Conflict of interest policy violations
2. Missing in action / unexplained absences
3. Slow to respond to messages/emails
4. Coworkers ratted them out because they often ended up picking up the work to get things done

What is one of the most frustrating parts of being a scientist or researcher?

I'll tell you what it is: referencing!

You have to do so much of it, and it's so annoying. You have to cite your sources, but there are so many different formats for citations! And then sometimes you don't even know how to cite something, and how are you supposed to know that unless you ask someone who knows? And even then, they might not be sure whether it should be an in-text citation or a footnote…
