The irony isn’t lost on me – paying for an education that should boost my income, only to feel like I’m still crawling out of the financial hole it created. It’s fair to question the ROI, but here’s the thing: sometimes the real value lies not just in the salary, but in the skills, network, and opportunities education brings. That said, let’s just say I’m still calculating my return on investment, very slowly.
I totally get where you're coming from. It's tough when it feels like the ROI just isn't there, especially with the cost of education these days. I’ve had those same thoughts, wondering if it's worth it. Sometimes, it feels like you’re paying off a debt for skills that don’t match up with the paycheck. You’re not wrong for questioning it.
Hard to say looking back. I took out about $50k in loans and paid about $175k back. Having degrees is one of the things that allowed me to get a foot in the door in my industry. Last year W-2 and 1098 combined I made just shy of $600k. I was also making a solid $10.50/hr 20 years ago after being jettisoned from the dot bomb crash. The startup job I had was in my field.
