This is easiest to execute when laterals join a firm that has offices in both locations, so they can start in their current location and transfer to the firm's office in the new location when the time comes. If there are any firms that have offices in both locations, I'd start with those and be transparent about your goals when you apply.
I think it depends on the firm and what your timeline is. We just hired someone from a different city who we expected to start remote before moving, but then his relocation timeline just went faster than anyone expected so he’s starting in-person. Time from offer to start date was about a month and a half because we knew he was coordinating a move during that time
That’s not for a year - I’d be worried that a firm would want you to move in the next several months. I know with our candidate, it was heavily discussed internally whether we believed he was actually serious about moving. With a timeline so far out, I’d be concerned that a firm won’t trust that you actually want to move
Honestly I think most firms would do this for a candidate they were excited about these days. Maybe you’d fly out and stay in a hotel for a week or two when you started to get to know everyone.
Depends on if you are in demand. Was offered to me as a second year finance associate
