No specific numbers from those two firms, but signing bonuses are still plentiful in in-demand practices (namely finance) from peer firms who can hit the ground running, especially if candidates have multiple offers.

likefunny

Yes, in finance for qualified candidates. I secured two finance offers last week, both with signing bonuses, and one of my clients told me firectly that they would pay up to $100K for qualified candidates in one of their very busy niche practices.

lol definitely not Sidley. Their juniors don’t have anything to do. Hours are 300 per year for first years. STB maybe.

Can ask up to $500k right now.

funny

What practice group at Sidley? From what I understand, M&A is very slow there so would be surprised if they’re offering bonuses

like

Ahh yeah, that makes a lot more sense

STB didn't even give signing bonuses to in demand mid-levels in high demand practices during covid...so doubt they'd be offering anything to anyone now

Ah ok thanks. Just wanted a sense of what my position is… esp coming in as a Canadian lateral

F - can you comment also with your class year (I’m a third year)

Funds. 2023 class

Are they even hiring juniors?

Yeah a bunch of the REF associates got one when they came over from a competitor firm

REF= real estate finance?

Any advice on how to get clients to pay your invoice on time / what to do when they don't? I'm currently working with an agency who agreed to net 30 terms, but has been late with every invoice so far...It's probably a lost cause on this particular job, but Im wondering if there's anything I can do in the future to avoid this situation. Does anyone charge a fee when invoices aren't paid on time? Or is this just par for the freelance life?

What questions should senior associates be asking to get a better assessment of partnership prospects? For context, I’m eligible this year as an 8th year, but it’s more common to make it around years 10-11 at my firm (only equity partners), and I’m trying to determine whether to stick around or lateral before I’m too senior. I’m in a smaller group that historically promotes only one new partner every few years, and there are several others also eligible. Any questions I should avoid asking?

Thoughts on Dechert FRE (real estate)?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Texans. Just got an offer from a V10 to relocate down and do litigation. Excited but the offer was 20k below market. Talked to managing partner and they said it’s the market in Houston so if I can find other firms paying full market they will raise it since I’ll be the only jr. - mid level. So give me names, who pays cravath in Houston?
