Are you already a manager? Had the DM visited the store in those 2 years? I’ll be honest, in most cases, if you’ve never met the DM, you won’t get the job. My DM definitely knows all the ASMs and much of the other key holders because they have to sign off on all manager hiring. I’m sure that’s not accurate in all companies/industries, but it’s common in most. I definitely recommend reaching out, but it reads like you’re an associate looking to become a store manager and that’s not likely. If you are a manager already, or want to be one, chat with your outgoing boss first about your strengths and opportunities and a growth plan.

Are you full time or part time? Your DM should be in your store at least once or twice a month (should being the key word) One of their major duties is creating a bench, for the exact situation you are facing (manager leaving)
A good, compentent DM should already have someone lined up to replace your manager (and every manager in the district). It should be easy to get on that list, IF you have a good, compentent DM. The fact that you have never met the DM is concerning, for many reasons.
How big is your district? Where is the nearest sister store? Are you open to running a different store than where you work now? Although not completely necessary, flexibility helps you. But your DM has to know you, and know your interests. Then you become part of their bench.
And retail is retail. I've seen companies go years without needing to replace management, then needing to replace 5 managers in a month. But the key is making sure those that need to know your interests, get to know you.
Have you tried actually reaching out? You never know what could happen. Some managers might not make the time, but others could be impressed with your proactiveness.
Seems like DM’s are easy to find online. You could message them there?
