It can be lonely at the top. There may be a certain amount of you being “the boss” that naturally creates some of that hesitation. So more likely than not it’s not personal (esp given that you care enough to ask about it here). A few tips that helped me back when I was staff:
1. You could try taking teams out to lunch individually and chatting about “how can I better enable you to succeed?”
2. The one club has a Creative Leaders Retreat program that was awesome, getting to hear from really big industry names about their experiences and challenges. See if your agency would send you to one.
3. There can be a fine line between having their respect and being their friend, and you want the former not necessarily the latter.
Yes I care very deeply and yes I have great relationships with all of them. I’ve led strong and successful work, have solid relationships with agency leadership, clients and other discipline leads. Leading and mentoring my team is by far my most important job and rocking it out is my greatest accomplishment.
Suggest seeking honest feedback from your mid-level managers - give them permission and safe space to crush your soul if needed. Perhaps a professional coach as well. Good luck!
