I would expect an equity partner’s % of equity to increase or decrease based on that partners value add contributions assessed each year. If the partner just had a single stand out year, but not likely to repeat - that would warrant an appropriate bonus, but not necessarily any additional % of equity. However, if that partner is bringing additional revenue to the firm that is expected to continue, beyond what they were doing when their equity was last assigned, that would warrant an appropriate equity increase.

I have my own firm and we’re growing quickly, so I’ve been thinking a lot about how equity might look substantially different (more like startup equity with significant potential for appreciation rather than biglaw equity with rights to profit distributions) and what partnership would look like, esp. compared to other firms.
