I've had similar experiences with mentors. They either don't put in the time, or you have to be really specific on what asks you make from them.
Yeah I think I wasn’t specific enough because she didn’t really teach me anything.
This makes me sad, I am a mentor and I will encourage you to keep meeting people until you find the right fit. You do have to be proactive and express your interests so there is a goal focused exchange and your mentor can provide guidance, shortcuts, and champion you! Don’t give up!
Thank you for the encouragement ♥️
Hi!
Here’s what I´d suggest:
what can <you> do to get more from being a Mentee?
Think about what goal would you like to achieve by having a Mentor? What knowledge would you like to gain? What skills would you like to develop?...
Then think about who would be the right person you can reach out who could help with that? (It might take a bit of time to identify the right person).
Next, you want to set clear goals & expectations with them, how often will you be meeting, what are the best ways for them to share thei knowledge, how will you ensure your progress...
Wish you all the best :)
Btw, if you’d like to chat further, feel free to message me/connect on LI. I´m a Career Coach, happy to offer some additional insights.
It is always a good idea to have a contract with your mentor-what each expects from the relationship, how often you expect to meet and what your goals are. If it is going to be a long term relationship, periodic reviews of how it is working for both of you are a good idea. These are the best pieces of advice I received from one of my mentors: 1 Agree on a process 2 Have goals 3 Be Proactive 4 Probe with questions 5 Make Connections 6 Be Frank with each other 7 Be authentic 8 Check up on a regular basis
