Creatives should work together at every stage. Ultimately, copy should have final say over copy and art over art. But if you don’t share your opinion on the whole work, you’re only doing half your job.
Good copy partners are looking at the whole piece but there are sometimes they can cross a line. It usually happens when it’s less conversational and more dictating. Keep an open mind but also trust your intuition.
A good copywriter should have a POV on art, just like a good designer should have a POV on copy. There's certainly a time and a place to speak up vs. stay in your lane, but sharing thoughts and ideas respectfully is the whole point of collaborating.
I've had plenty of ADs give unsolicited copy advice too. As a whole, it's good to stay in your lane, but there is nothing wrong with constructive feedback.
Copywriters have to become proficient with design if they want to become CDs, at least in my universe, so yes, it’s normal to give feedback. Nit-picking design is annoying, though, and should be discouraged.
