Depends on what you mean by manage. PMs can’t help with career management but can be hugely helpful with media workflow management - same as any other workflow. It’s the same basic principle as managing creative work - we can’t and shouldn’t get deep into the mechanics, but we can help make sure that timelines are established, dependencies understood, etc.
I’ve been a media-focused senior PM for several years. Every account I’ve worked on is at the request of both client and Media PM. I have heard nothing but positive feedback from all my media stakeholders on how much PM involvement has improved their day-to-day. @EVP, you clearly had some kind of bad experience for you to have such vitriol for this. Don’t worry, your business is safe under your command. I have more requests for media PM support than I can staff at the moment.
It’s so weird that people are so upset by project management as a profession. It was created for a reason and yet people like EVP have such a disdain for the profession. Why?!
EVP, media people don’t have deliverables?? What y’all doing all day?? Additionally, are you confusing project managers with media managers? Because project managers are not in charge of other discipline’s growth, we are in charge of their process. Their MANAGERS are in charge of their growth. As Digitas1 said, it’s managing workflow, not the mechanics. I’ve seen more and more media PM postings in the past few weeks have have been contacted for a few also, there is obviously a need for media project management that is growing.
We are usually fine establishing and managing our own timelines
I have seen PMs do amazing things with our teams. These comments are a damn shame and are half the reason why PM doesn’t explode across media agencies.
Wow EVP take a chill pill. If anyone on this thread is childish, it is you. 0 to 60 for no reason.
They can't help with media and don't know the mechanics of the job so...no. They can manage a deliverable. Such as a deck. But not teams. How will the people grow?
Your post didn't say helping with process mechanics. It said Manage. Your arrogance that you can add exponential value without understanding the tasks and complications of the process is telling. I am sorry your pool of dev work is drying up but I don't have clients dollars to devote to ongoing incremental costs that don't translate into KPI delivery and business outcomes.
@VP manage can also mean manage workflow. Also I’m the OP here. Quick to accuse arrogance to others when you’re clearly the one clueless. I bet your team is sloppy as hell.
Mad respect upon all other replies.
^ such as?
You claim to be a process expert. What are your credentials that make you superior to a 3rd party audited set of standards and procedures we put into place across over 60 clients? If you speak to teams the way you post I don't want you anywhere near my business.
I am not upset about PM as a profession. I have been a stakeholders in scrum dev projects during my career and have great appreciation for the role of a PM on workstreams where you are leveraging disparate developer talent to complete a discrete project. Think a CMS or an App or something else scoped as a project. What I took issue with is inserting another FTE cost into an AOR model just because. You know mad props and all. This is a childish thread.
Digitas still has media? Outside of Amex?
We’re in Pub Media for a reason.
Right. Amex.
☝️Maybe. I am very young.
