Do you think having a drink during lunch with clients or your team is ever appropriate? I’m not the one to suggest it, but if a client brings it up or there’s some peer pressure, I’ll usually go along. Sometimes it can make the lunch feel more relaxed and conversational, but other times I wonder if it crosses a line. Curious others' perspectives.

My old manager would drink at every single client lunch. She wasn’t one to get buzzed very quickly, so I’m not sure it made a negative impact on any relationships. Just kind of something she always did. I personally don’t just because I never drink.

I get that - everyone has their own approach. Sounds like your manager had it under control, but I totally relate to skipping it if you don’t drink at all.

I'd never do it, but I barely drink these days anyway. I suppose it's not a problem as long as someone isn't impaired when they get back to work. But I suppose it would very much depend on the culture of the organization one works for, not to mention the role. If I had a drink in the day I think I'd be functionally useless, I feel like I'd be making mistakes in my work.

I get that - daytime drinks definitely hit harder when you’re expected to get back to work.

Be aware of your company policies. Some prohibit it, some leave more of a grey area. If there is peer pressure, that’s actually when I’d drag my heels and decline. If you follow the client's lead of your own accord, that’s different. The safe answer is not to drink, but there are different scenarios out there.

That’s a really balanced way to look at it. Policies, culture, and intent all matter!

It really depends on the company culture and the context. I’ve had client lunches where ordering a drink was totally normal and even helped break the ice, but I’ve also worked at places where it would’ve been a big no-no. When I’m unsure, I just follow the lead of whoever’s hosting. Curious: Do you feel comfortable doing it?

I feel the same - it really depends on the culture. Personally, I’m usually more comfortable not ordering a drink unless the client brings it up first. It feels safer to take the lead from them.

Personally, I cannot see the harm in it, as long as it is allowed within your company. Making sure nobody is going crazy, and it is only one or two, I don't see the issue. Personally I wouldn't as I am not a huge drinker, but a lot of people where I work do and it's never an issue!

That makes sense. I think keeping it moderate and following company norms is key. It’s nice when a little drink can help ease the conversation without causing any issues.

I never have. I’d let the client set the tone and if they happened to order a bottle of wine I’m sure I’d have some, but it never happened. Only at dinners / after work drinks.

I am beyond stuck in my first 1.5 years of my career.

I was over promised opportunities at my first gig and then Covid hit. Leading me to have no portfolio worthy pieces from this 💩 agency with nothing great in sight. (place hasn’t won a pitch in my entire time here + lost clients)

I’m juggling re-vamping my site and a side project to hopefully make my book more robust.

With no kind of leadership or mentor, I’m just figuring out how to dig myself out of this hole. Any advice for this chump?

Hello All,

Have a few questions regarding IBM Joining, HR response is strangely lacking and so does in the slack(prejoin channels). Hoping can be cleared here..
a) I've been told virtual onboarding is no longer a thing.
How many days does in-person onboarding activities occur?
b) HR Informed,"After onboarding is complete, can get perm WFH based on project or extension of WFH as IBM is flexible"
Is this true? Can managers extend/grant remote for a month then let us transit to remote model?

Also, I have an idea of what I should be compensated in this type of role, but any insights on how they pay compared to others would be helpful. Are you traveling during the pandemic or have client interactions been virtual? Lastly, if you are a consultant here, are you on billable hours? My current consulting role is not - so this would be new.

Writing annual goals. What are examples of how to write “quantifiable” goals as a consultant? Are you measuring number of relationships built, projects, or something else?

Most of consulting is advising on solutions to problems, but I don’t control the outcome, whether the advice is implemented, or the budget. Sales is easy (e.g. “sell $2M of products/services this year”) because there is a clearly defined measurement. What can consultants measure?

How much would a CD earns in an Singaporean agency?

I’ve been at my company for 8 months. I just found out another designer who has been here for several years gets an annual bonus at the end of the fiscal year. I have never been told about a bonus and haven’t gotten one yet for the previous fiscal year that ended In July. Should I have been told I get a bonus when I signed on or are they typically a surprise?
