OP: “All your peers” are not growing in their careers as fast as you think. Some might be. Some are just good at making it seem that way. Many can’t even find a job. Don’t be fooled by social media. That said, I commend your ambition.
You’re probably not in as bad a position as you think you’re in. Read some ad books, start proactively coming up with the types of campaigns you want to work on, find an AD to make things with. You’ll be ok. Your career is a marathon, not a sprint.

Passion projects help show a different side of you as a creative. If you need a mentor, try reaching out to your former college professors and also start networking on LinkedIn. A lot of professionals have no problem reviewing your portfolio for about 30 minutes and it creates an organic relationship over time.
Honestly nothing much happens your first 2 years in the biz. Learn whatever you can. Don’t stress too much.

If you have bandwidth, I would try to find some freelance work on the side. You can get paid and ideally find better creative opportunities to improve your book.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. Just making it through covid with a job is an accomplishment.
Having said that the vast majority of agency work is not “book worthy” work so doing passion/pro Bono work is a better guarantee while you navigate getting better projects in the office.
Waiting for clients to chose you’re best ideas and office politics and environments can be stifling so giving yourself a more creative outlet can be a life saver. You can also have a relaxed timeline on your own work usually.
Side note. An acquaintance created a board game that made him millions. I’m jealous and happy for him. I also can’t recall as many of his other “legit” projects off the top of my head.
Add cool spec work to your portfolio if you can’t produce anything you like. It’s the best way to show your thinking as a junior creative.
