Fascinating! Maybe one day I’ll be someone who casually strolls into the Gucci store during my layover to drop a few grand.
They are popular with international travelers that may not be able to buy these brands easily in their home country.
The airport is usually the best place to buy perfumes because they tend to have a very wide selection with all of them open for you to sample.
Yes also duty free - easier in the airport to get that VAT refund automatically taken off vs having to go to the kiosk if you shop in country
Pro
Yes, lots of people do! Especially the big brands like chanel or Hermes. They might have special items in the airport that are hard to find.
So is it the selection (as opposed to price/deals) that draws folks? I assume they don’t have sales and cater to a very niche audience who’s more interested in specific items that may not be available at the designer stores near their home or destination.
Pro
I’d say it is more the selection and access to certain items you can’t find elsewhere. If you’re paying $5,000 - 15,000 for a bag, the extra $100-200 saved isn’t the main driver.
Not high end designer but I bought a Tumi backpack at an airport store. I had my work laptop with me and wanted to make sure it would fit!
I’ve bought things out of necessity
In my first role outside of undergrad was working on airport spaces for a large eyewear company. You will be amazed by the amount of traffic that goes through airports (many with sales). Chicago O’Hare sometimes has up to three of the same designer stores!
What LinkedIn1 said… it’s access to goods they probably can’t get in their home country or they’re significantly more expensive/higher taxes. The taxes is 100% a factor too.
I sometimes go for duty free when I’m on a transfer
Yes!!! Have you seen Crazy Rich Asians do the shopping?
Yes, decent sales from a combination of a captive audience and people looking for forgotten/last minute gifts to give someone on return
