I do not and feel like that actually ices me out from partnership prospects
This is what I miss most about the firm I left a year ago. My new firm was an upgrade in every other way: more money, more prestige, more interesting work. But I really, really, really miss the people at my old firm. Everyone around me now is super busy, and it feels like no one cares to connect on a personal level outside of the bare minimum needed to push our cases forward. I miss having colleagues who were also genuine friends (not just “work friends”).
Same boat but I also am busy with my personal life outside of work so I am not too bothered by it
I feel like I know a lot about everyone I work with. I'm at an ID firm which can otherwise suck but the reason I stay is the people I work with are fantastic and I get paid pretty well.
Nope other than associates who have left hah. I do find more luck with men associates for whatever reason but also barely.
Find the guys. I’m serious. My biggest advocates in firms are usually old white and Asian guys, and I’m a brown woman. The women and people of color sometimes have a mentality of “there can only be one of us” or “I had to figure it out myself so I’m not helping you” or “I don’t want to be seen helping you because people will assume I helped you because you’re also a woman or we’re both women of color.”
Nope Gen X and millennials.
Not meaningful relationships, but I make conversation with everyone I work with. I always say hi if the door is open (or wave through the window when I pass by), and I ask about weekend plans, make pop culture references, gripe about firm decisions, and other shoot the shit talk. Nothing that doesn’t take more than 1 minute to kickstart the convo before cutting it off to ask about the project/task. But, seems to be enough to get people to open up and talk to me! When we’re slow, I grab coffees with people (15-20 min meetings).
I get my meaningful connections satisfied by non work relations. This is just so I somewhat know my colleagues.
