I started keeping a food journal when I realized my stomach hurt pretty much 24/7. Some really good ideas above, but I just kept mine really basic when first starting out. Just using the notes app on my phone to write in what I ate soon after eating! I say that just because waiting until the end of the day, meant I was forgetting things!
I have done it in order to keep track of everything I was eating and my caloric intake and all that. Honestly it was pretty easy, I just used a notebook and kept track of everything in there. I have also used myfitnesspal in the past which is another good way to keep track of everything.
