1) Try to have your themes repeat, or at least echo, between pre-Civil War and post-Civil War. It makes for a nice arrangement and it can help students draw comparisons.
2) You'll never get through all the "content." But you shouldn't anyway. USH is a survey class - if the kids want to get in depth into something, offer a chance to write a research essay. Or they can wait until college for a more in-depth course.
Yeah, I would totally like some tips also. I’m so used to teaching chronologicallly
Doing it in summer school for the first time and it is challenging for me. I feel like I’m missing content doing it this way.
For me it was unsatisfying, but keep in mind it is a very short course during the summer. There are teachers here that do it throughout the whole year. They find it very effective.
I teach 20th century American history. Up until WW2, I teach chronologically. After the war, I teach thematically.
Yes, while somewhat chronological, I go Renaissance/Reformation, Age of Exploration, Absolutism (short), Revolution/Enlightenment, Industrial Revolution (short), second semester Nationalism, Imperialism/Racism, WW1 (short), Totalitarianism/WW2. If capstone projects don't go long, I do a week of student requested discussions of why different groups hate us... normal requests are radical sunni, Iran, DPRK. Post WW2 gets covered in US History.
