Dreading an upcoming performance review. My boss is great, but I get so anxious in those formal situations. Any advice for handling this?

Just know performance reviews always make everyone anxious. Even your boss. I’ve found they reason I am less anxious in both situations is I am always having performance discussions with my boss and my reports. I don’t wait for one time per year.

Best to just face it head-on. I try to review my work and focus on positive outcomes that I've had. This way, if there is anything negative in the review, I can remind myself of all the places where I'm successful and take the feedback less personally.

Just practice in front of the mirror so it feels like a real person is there. Try to go through the questions or responses they will have. And when it's time for the review, breathe very slowly. It'll help keep your blood pressure down and make you think more clearly.

It’s your performance so what are you nervous about? Go in knowing what you did, what impact and value you created for your teams, agency, and clients, and advocate for a job well done achieving any goals you set with your manager or for yourself. You know what you did better than anyone, so go in prepared and pull out all the stops. A good manager will want to see you succeed, not keep you from it.

Honest advice: It doesn't matter at all. If there's money or an opportunity, they give you a bump. If there isn't, they won't. That's all. It has nothing to do with you. I have a great friend who was my art partner ages ago, and now manages about 25 people. He hates writing reviews and even though he's an ECD, in reality he has next to zero input on raises and promotions. I write his reviews for him. It's been a running joke with us for years. I just write 'em based on some really vague descriptions. It doesn't matter. Don't sweat it.
