There are several ways to negotiate - first you can negotiate your salary. This is the one we are commonly encouraged to negotiate.
You can also negotiate your level and responsibilities, as well as your benefits.
I would encourage you to go in with several asks ONCE YOU HAVE AN OFFER. Don't try to negotiate before an offer.
For example: Thank you for the offer to join the team! I am excited about the role and impact I can have. I have few questions however to make sure this offer makes sense for my family and I.
I see you are offering me $$. Are you able to bring that up to $$$? [ask in person / over the phone and put them on the spot. It is harder to say no in person]
The offer also goes into benefits, Can we review those together? [break for them to explain]. Thank you for the details. Most of this package sounds great, but would you be able to ..... [add an extra week of PTO, increase their employer contribution or even start your benefits earlier than 1-3mo wait]
If you go in with two asks you are more likely to get one of them.
Here are some tips:
-Ask in person or over the phone / zoom
-Don't be greedy, make sure your asks are realistic for the market. You are not going to get 6mos PTO.
-Be ok with them saying no. This is a negotiation not a demand. Understand what you NEED and what you WANT
-Don't be abrasive, I have had to pull offers from candidates who made it seem like they would be hard to work with. Find the balance of confidence and professionalism.
Good luck!
I'm sending you positive vibes. I feel your pain. I'm overqualified for most jobs and underqualified for the rest. Stay positive. You got this!
