First impressions outfit - I realized that lately I have been intentionally reaching for trousers rather than dresses and skirts (specifically when it’s all males or predominantly male group) for my first few meetings with CXO level client and even internal leadership. I did some introspection so as to why. I feel like I do that to make sure that audience (senior leaders internally or client side) will take me seriously given the demographic mentioned above. I fear that they may not … Continued

I definitely think the same way as you and I feel more powerful in pants vs skirts/dresses anyway

Boy did I used to. I grew up in tech where I used to feel the same way - and now in the c suite wearing dresses, color, and today I’m even wearing ruffles. I say, own your style and femininity. And find how it sets you apart. I do now. Wish I saw it sooner (when I was younger and cuter!)

I used to feel that way. Especially when I first got started in tech. Like if I dress like them, they’re going to respect me more and maybe hear me better.

But all I did was lose me my authenticity and my individuality. It made me feel more like an imposter.

Don’t get me wrong. I like wearing pants and khakis are damn comfortable (started in tech in 90’s GAP had a monopoly on workwear). But I also wanted to be pretty, I wanted to wear the things that I always thought I would once I started a job. Cute pencil skirt and twinset and sensible heels that I could switch out into sneaker just like in Working Girl.

At the end of the day, it really didn’t matter what I was wearing, I was treated based off of how I could articulate myself, and that was based off of how comfortable I felt not just in my knowledge, but in myself. And I was most comfortable with myself by dressing the way that I wanted to based on the way I felt rather than how I thought other people would perceive me.

… not take me seriously if I am wearing dresses or skirts, during initial period. I am comfortable wearing professional dresses and skirts once I have built my reputation. I work in tech which is male heavy. I have no trouble with such thoughts when it comes to juniors, or team members or even peers to an extent (similar feelings to take extra steps to make sure they take me seriously if a peer is lot more experienced than me)

Anyone else feel this way. Any suggestions? Not just for dressing but in general related to this feeling.

100% with you. Always careful to look pretty conservative to those who don’t know me as well. When I know them better, I go more “feminine.” But I do think skirts and dresses can be conservative when done right. But overall I do lean more “fashion forward” only once I feel more established, so to speak.

Thank you all for sharing and relating

I think a lot of it is what is YOUR power outfit? Like you’ll notice different female politicians have different preferences for their style.

Mine is pants and I will default to pants for important meetings and interviews (though I love a good skirt sometimes).
