It took about a year from offer to start date with the clearance for me, but back then, they were doing the long clearances (forget the official name). Not sure if that is still happening now to save money.
It takes about 6 weeks to get an interim clearance. But sometimes things may come up where they won’t give you the interim and you’ll have to wait. It can be something like having a foreign contact (spouse with a green card). It depends on the investigator
It was about 6 weeks for me. I told my firm significantly in advance and I would advise doing the same to line up people and for conflict purposes, but my investigator was still contacting people from my job after I’d been cleared to start (and left my firm) so unsure about that one if you don’t tell.
I would not call it laid back at all. But I was going to an office that I was regularly in front of so they may have been incentivized to not do something awful.
