Logistically I can’t imagine how you would avoid disclosing. Do you think people won’t ask?
Yeah, what? You realize they’re going to ask, right? I guess you could say “I don’t want to disclose,” but that would be incredibly weird and come off worse than just saying “I’m going to ___.”
How does one get away with this lol? It’s the first question they ask and really weird in conversations to maneuver around not saying the firm. If someone did this, I assume they wanted to burn the bridge. Unless you’re being pushed out, why would you risk that? You never know when you’ll need someone.
As a recruiter, I've had candidates who've elected not to disclose, and others who have been completely open. When I worked internally at a law firm, about 30% of candidates would not disclose where they were going if moving on to a competitor. It didn't seem to impact their future relationships with the firm as long as they phrased it appropriately.
I prefer not to disclose during my notice period. Keep it simple vs. being coy about it. There is nothing wrong with wanting privacy around this.
Just tell them who cares
I did this. And they did ask but this was over email so I just didn’t respond. When HR asked, I said exactly what you said that I’m going to pursue a new opportunity and when she said where is it I said I’m not willing to disclose.

Nobody else at your firm asked??

I’ve seen similar questions before and it makes no sense to me why anyone would not say where they are going. Everyone is going to find out eventually. Is it something about a dramatic reveal?
It would seem like not revealing would make the conversation awkward and uncomfortable.
You’re right. You should keep this information locked up. Because, there is absolutely no way for anyone to find out what firm you have transitioned to once you leave. You will be a ghost, if you will.
The percentage of people who withhold where they are going has increased dramatically in recent years.

I’ve noticed that. Not sure if you saw the response I just posted, but I do wonder if it is at least in part because younger more tech influenced associates tend to avoid potentially difficult conversations. I can’t think of any other reason to keep this kind of information a secret if it’s going to be on your LinkedIn or otherwise public in a couple of weeks, but I’m all ears!
I was pushed to disclose but didn’t say shit.
I’m aware. I’d rather delay it and know that nothing weird went down while I was still legally employed at my soon-to-be previous firm.
