Does someone have a good punch list of things to do before giving notice at a firm?

Organize your desktop and move all personal things to a box account or something similar, file any docs/emails you haven’t yet, clean up any long term, not pressing To Dos on matters (you obviously don’t have to do this but nice to leave a good impression IMO). When I lateraled, someone told me to come up with a bullet point list of the ‘sound bites’ of why I was leaving and to stick to it - depending on your status @ the firm, you may be in for a ton of awkward convos with people you aren’t close with and want to make sure you don’t go rogue. Most importantly, enjoy the time you can be checked out - it doesn’t last forever!

Would anyone recommend or share a side hustle that would complement a banker’s 8-5 M-F schedule? How do you respond to someone whose response to the recent rise in anti AAPI hate/rhetoric is “I don’t know anyone who dislikes Asians”, “everyone is racist”, “racism isn’t evil, it’s ignorance and biology” in a way that’s neutral and educational?

I’m at the point where I don’t really care to engage but also don’t want to remain silent.

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.

I lateraled from a small firm to regional big law last year. I was told that my offer was commensurate with class year (5th year). The firm recently increased first year salary, with a 5% increase for all other attorneys. My original salary was equal to the new first year salary. The difference between my new salary and a first year is now $10k. I think it is fairly obvious that the hiring partner was not truthful with me. How would you address this? Is another lateral move my only option?

So my firm asked us first year associates to give them two choices for some partners to be our mentors, and they don’t need to be in our practice group. I have worked with several partners and they all seem to be good mentors I could learn from. So how could I choose my mentors? Should I choose someone I have not worked with yet, someone most senior in the firm, or someone may give mr most work in the future?

People who don’t submit their time daily, how do you remember what you did and for how long? I’ve always just submitted each timer as soon as I finish a task—“call with x re y” really doesn’t take that long even if I’m busy, and if I don’t do it immediately I’ll forget all those little I did in the morning by the time I go to bed. No shade at all to those with different systems, just genuinely curious because I see a lot about catching up at month end on here and I have no idea how that works??

How do I quit my firm? I’ve accepted a position with a previous employer (non-legal), and they’d like me to start in 2 weeks. Paralegals have an informal agreement to stay with the firm for 2 years and I’m a few months shy of that, so I’m afraid they will be difficult in paying out my bonus from last year and my unused PTO. I’ve heard some shady things regarding leaving before the 2 year mark. Thanks!

Big law literally saved my life. I was working for the government and being sued by creditors and in a deep, dark place. I wasn't even able to afford my Ube transfer application on my own. I've been at my firm for 3 years now and my life has completely changed. I was so close to declaring bankruptcy it's not even funny. I understand why people rag on it but some of us would be in a really bad place if we weren't here

General corporate in NY looking to lateral into tech transactions at one of the EC/VC firms. I’ve heard that I may get a class cut if I make the move but I’m ok with that. My worry is that EC/VC firms are crazy busy work differently from general corp, I also won’t have control over my hours, and potentially worse based on how billing differs (block billing on a few clients vs having to work with 15 or more startups). Is the same true for tech trans or IP group?
