I’m one of the only attorneys in my Texas firm that had electricity, internet, and water this week. I was warm and comfortable but still could not get any work done because things going on in the outside world are distracting. When I try to work, I feel like I can barely hold a thought in my mind before I get the “wait, what am I doing again?” feeling. I just want to know, I’m not the only one that struggled this week to do any work, right?

I wish our business was more conducive to taking opportunities like this to get out and help the community as a firm instead of sticking heads in the sand and billing. Every disaster in 2020 and early 2021 has made me scratch my head as to why we continue to pretend like everything has been normal the past several months. I understand we have bottom lines and ethical obligations to our clients, but the part of me that got into law to help people has difficulty doing doc review while my neighbors freeze/starve/die from covid.

Depends on where you are at and how fungible you are. If others can do what you do and your firm is Texas-centric, that lends itself to what you describe. If you are in a national or international firm and your expertise is unique in the firm, you have to just keep helping to the extent possible. Doesn’t mean the latter firm or its people are bad. Their clients still need to get things done. Can’t tell them “hey, sorry, the expert on this is in Texas and is out delivering water so your $10 billion deal has to be delayed and potentially put at risk of falling apart.” Too often on here, I see commentary that implies partners are just evilly demanding that work be done for purely financially maximizing reasons. Nobody is saying “screw those guys, keep them billing in the cold with no power.” It instead almost always is driven by client demands.

No, not alone. I’m in Texas too and although we had to relocate a couple of times we were only without power for 1 day. My practice group members have been without power for days, so I feel overwhelmed in the amount I need to pick up while they can’t work and also incredibly distracted with all of the relocating, water situation, and dealing with our dogs and those we’ve taken in. It’s been a very unproductive week, but I’m so grateful to be warm

I am expecting an offer from Oracle Digital, Consulting with about 60% hike (25 LPA fixed + Variable at 5.2 YOE) from current pay package and a role of principal consultant.
A few questions I have regarding this.

1. What are the perks/employee ben there?
2. How is the work life balance?
3. How is the hike and bonus?
4. How is the scope of moving to development centre of Oracle - IDC?

Finally, what do you guys think about the pay package, should I be targetting a higher pay package?

Thank You!

I am in a bit of a good/bad spot. I have worked at Salesforce for close to a year as a consultant. They want to bring back travel to 50%+ post Covid and I am not feeling that motivated to be away from my family that often. I have an opportunity to join a startup as a Sr. PM likely making the same or a tiny bit less. But no travel and not consulting. All internal project. I don’t know what else I should be looking at. My manager scheduled a feedback conversation and I know it's bc I've made some noticeable mistakes lately due to moving too fast, not being able to focus, racing thoughts, etc. I'm seeing a therapist about whether I have ADHD and if so, what tx looks like; we started the intake process which will be continued in my 2nd appointment, which is after the feedback convo meeting. Is it worth telling my mgr something eg I recognize the careless mistakes and I'm in the process of seeing tx to help?

I always underestimate how long things will take, both because we ADHD’ers view time differently and because I don’t build in time for getting distracted.

I work with a partner who asks me by when I can get something done rather than giving a deadline. I appreciate the flexibility but I always short sell myself and end up pulling all-nighters to meet my self-imposed unrealistic deadlines.
