For years of using Macbook for creative work. How do you cope with having to use Windows for your new job place that is an in-house creative?

I use windows on my personal computer for creative freelance work. You'll get used to command vs control in your hotkeys. I find no difference in my workflows between Apple and Windows otherwise.

If they do any type of 3d work, of course they want Windows machines with dedicated graphics. The old idea that Macs are the only good machines for design work is so misguided. Fun fact, Samsung makes the screen your Macbook uses. They also make your iPhone screen. In the end YOU are the designer and these are just interchangeable tools. Be open and flexible.

If they are using windows for the creative dept. do you think they value design?
Microsoft’s creative dept doesn’t even use windows. That should say a lot

what a dumb take. a lot of companies use PC instead of mac, simply because you can get much better specs on a pc for a mac of the same price. i used to work at a company when they supplied us with macbooks but now work at a much bigger corporation with a Dell that is waaay more capable in every way than my macbook was.

like

Ive used both interchangeably throughout my career and at this point if the specs of the PC are good enough to run the programs there is no real difference in the functionality of the programs we use to do our work. You just get used to it.

like

@MD, in terms of the colour accuracy specs, is it good enough? I often see windows with a matte screen layer.

I might be the odd one here but I'm actually the opposite. I grew up using PC and prefer it since that's what I'm used to. I have gotten better at using a Mac but it's still not fully second nature to me yet and I don't know if it ever will be lol

Remap your keys to Mac control structure, it will help it feel more natural.

Figma, Miro, etc are all web based now, so feel pretty similar across platforms.

I was an AD on Microsoft many years ago. But there was a reason why all the art creatives used MacBooks to make Microsoft ads.

The only ones on the team who used windows were writers and accounts.

I took a creative role being told I was going to be on mac. I’ve been mac based for 30 years.

First day they told me that we are putting you in windows as the IT guy felt Mac’s were dangerous in a windows environment. Which is BS.

12 months of pain. Relearning and dealing with fonts converting on all artwork. Crashing. File corruptions. Not able to open mac based quick workflows. I picked it up, it was an extra skill, but it slowed me down and gave the company issues with artworking and meeting tight deadlines.

Move to now. IT guy was sacked and I’m back on a Mac book pro and flying work out. With no crashes or issues.

Good feedback here. I am fluid on both OS's having to adapt to a PC working remotely. I had briefly tried to work on my mac, then email the file to the parent company, and from there to the client. So that workflow stank to high heaven, and took at least 10-15 minutes. Now I can work live and very fast (on their PC) when openly collaborating. Go with the flow.

If you feel limited by the tools you use, the real opportunity lies in how you adapt and grow with them. Macs were once the standard for design, but the landscape evolved over 20 years ago.

like

Run. Nobody who values or understands design would make designers work on windows.

The hostility on my team is rough. We have a yeller. I walked by her room the other day. She was screaming across the room at a student, "you have to be kind to get kindness." Seriously, those were her words in a loud, berating, angry tone. Our admin has asked that we not report these. We are to talk to the teacher. She has yelled at me and other adults. Admin has to know she treats the kids this way too. One teacher has to work with her door closed to not hear the yelling all day.

Each team's has its own process, design system, technology etc. We identified that most of the teams use and need components that were already conceptualised, designed and developed, for our other products, and we are starting to create a global set of components, a global design system that we will use on all our products.
