Going solo. Plaintiff-side PI. No referral sources or existing business. $50k in money to “play” with relating to marketing, etc. What’s my best course of action? Google ads? Lead services? Will be trying to network but initially it will take time.

DIY social media on whatever platform your clients/community like, I’d save that $50k for emergencies. Google and lead gen will eat up $50k with just a roll of the dice for results. I represent solo and small law firms as outside General Counsel if you’d ever like to chat DM me. Good luck and congrats!

You’ve been provided with good advice above. Time is your biggest asset. Do not try to outspend these big firms. Post weekly on social media. You should post so much that your followers and friends look at you as their personal expert on PI issues. Ask your friends to share your posts. Use your money to sponsor smaller events, and attend those events so you can form genuine relationships with people. If you just opened, figure out a way to get involved with a back-to-school event ASAP. Wear your firm’s t-shirt, and pass out something to kids with your logo on it. You can do well as a smaller PI firm if you can build solid relationships.

You can start with $5k! It’s all about your drive and willingness to do what it takes to secure clients! Is it only PI? What other law can you prescribe that will pay the bills?

like

No, I’m saying in addition to PI. I have 7 years of experience doing a mixture of plaintiff and defense work.

Wild to me! I’m planning to start a firm with a partner next year, but wouldn’t have the guts to do it with 50k.
Kudos

We’ve had our firm for five year handling business, family and PI matters. Google ads have been great for family law and somewhat for business. But PI has been strictly referral base. So post as much as you can about PI and let your network know you’re the PI go to.

You need a good plan in place to fund your cases.

I currently work at a small PI firm in Atlanta were EVERYTHING is settled presuit. If we’re unable to settle, then it’s referred to another firm for litigation. This whole process seems very atypical to me and the attorneys rarely touch a file until the first liability offer is received. The paralegals handle everything from intake to drafting the demands. The attorney briefly skims (does NOT read) the demand packages and signs. Is this ethical?? Anyone else work at a firm that is run this way??

Hello all, I'm a very green attorney, never tried a single case or even was second or third chair, but managed to land a litigation associate position at a Plaintiff's firm. Does anyone remember their first trial? How did you feel and how did it turn out by comparison? Anything you wish you did differently?
I know in THEORY what the process of trials are but thanks to COVID I haven't been able to observe them in real life so I'm very nervous for the day I finally enter a courtroom.

What’s a good LA or NY business litigation firm and salary to expect? I’m a 2yr with quite frankly a lot of experience across civ rights, PI, excessive force, wrongful death, employment defense, K dispute, corp. structure dispute, professional licensure. In house or M&A/Real Estate Transactional are likely the end goal but want to get the litigation out of me first.

I need a laugh. Tell me about your most entitled client.

What's your preference for plaintiff's side? Steady pay at approximately $120k with no bonuses, or a base salary of $70k plus a cut of what you close over a minimum threashold? Midwest-ish market. In both situations, you get a cut of what you bring in.

Hello All,
I am finishing up my second year of practice as a lawyer. I transitioned to plaintiffs pi work from a boutique commercial litigation firm. I like the work and not having to bill. The issue I am having is managing volume. I have about 150 active files some pre-lit and the rest are in litigation. Cases range in value from very small to low six figures. I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)

I give my cell phone to all clients routinely. However, there are always 1 to 2 clients who abuse this and it seems as soon as their cases are over I find a new one and it is making me rethink. I hate to do this because 98% do not abuse it and I like being connected to my people. Thoughts??

For Plaintiff's attorneys, how big is your caseload? What kind of cases are the majority of them and are they in suit?
