Going to my first ~real~ trial the week after next (my only other trial was a 1 day zoom bench trial). 5 days in a different city. Give me all the tips and tricks.

Get some protein bars. Because: 1) you might not have time to stop to grab food, 2) you should really stay away from heavy/fast food, and 3) you might be so nervous that you really can't keep much down without wanting to puke.

Bring hard copies of everything you will want to use (notes, outlines, exhibits), because tech has a way of failing when you need it.

Make sure your shoes are comfortable.

Have a copy of the trial rules, local rules, model jury instructions...I've had to use them in the courtroom before.

Track all exhibits and docs marked for ID on a chart and share that with your team each day

Take notes if you can. They’ll come in handy later if there is an appeal/post-trial motions

Make sure you have a wifi source

Wear the comfortable shoes

Pack Mints, cough drops, tissues, and water

Try to eat foods you tolerate well during the week if you can (tough when travel is involved)

Don’t be afraid to take a moment or more when the court day is done before throwing yourself back into trial prep. Your mind works best when it’s well-cared for

All the above. I also recommend getting a small order of groceries delivered to your hotel room for basics you can take to court or eat in the AM/PM. My last trial I had cold brew, little cheese and nut packs, and some peanut butter and bread for sandwiches. Check your courthouse rules re food and drink (mine let me bring a cooler for the witness room to store stuff).

I also recommend having copies of the rules and a quick sheet with objections and rules of evidence.

From the second you leave your hotel until you get back… you are the nicest person in the world. You don’t cut anyone off in traffic. You smile at people as you walk to court. You talk to security on your way in and out every day. You get to know the bailiffs, JA, clerk by name and you make conversation with them every day. It matters. At my last trial, it made a huge difference and the entire jury stayed after the trial to talk to us and commented about the way we acted versus how OC acted. Also, the court staff work with the judge every day. They talk to the judge. Make sure they only have great things to say about you.

Also, pack a box you can keep in the courtroom if the judge allows, with water bottles, snacks, tissues, ibuprofen, take emergen-C every day bc the stress will weaken your immune system. Stay late prepping with the partner/lead counsel every day even if it’s prepping for their witness because you will learn so much! Most of all, have fun. I just had my first 2 week trial a few months ago and it was a lot of work and stress … but I had the time of my life! Can’t wait to do it again in a few months! So most of all - have fun !
