We dyed our niece’s hair her natural color and that solved the problem right away.
Did the dye kill it? Or make them easier to find? He’s 8 and blond but I don’t want to dye it.
Try Fairy Tales Lice Good-Bye Survival Kit. It’s pesticide free and has natural ingredients. Friend used it on her kids and she said it worked really well. They also have a shampoo and conditioner that repels.
I paid to go to a professional service that does the heat treatment and gets rid of lice and eggs in one session. Money well spend for the peace of mind.
Get lice shampoo and wash all the bedding in hot water.
Also use the hottest setting on the dryer.
Boy or girl? I have a lot to say about long thick girl hair, but I’ll spare you if you have a boy with short hair :). Or a girl with short hair!
But in general, the key is to check every day with a lice comb for a long time because the lice lay eggs and the eggs hatch and so if you miss any, they’ll just keep laying eggs and never go away.
Thanks EY! We ended up going to a salon
We went to a lice removal salon. Heard horror stories of ppl trying to do it on their own and doing it wrong and it spreading to more family members, so we bit the bullet and paid for it. Not saying home remedies don’t work, we simply didn’t want to deal with the risk.
The salon we went to wanted to check all household members (a smaller fee for just a check) in order to be able to provide the guarantee that the people they treated were good to go (otherwise there’s a risk they go home and immediately get lice again).
Wash everything with fabric in hot water. Put all stuffies, area rugs, non washable fabric things in a plastic/trash bag in the garage or elsewhere out of the house for at least 2 weeks. After the initial treatment, do again in a week (or whatever the recommended interval on the back is) and then another week later if you’re still seeing eggs/nits.
There are kits with the lotion that kills/shampoo and a spray for furniture you can get. Pick up shower caps to cover the head for the treatment time. A headlamp works well for the combing process, blondes are hard since the eggs blend in really well so make sure you look at different angles. The combs are good, but my kids’ hair is so fine I had to pick them out with my fingers once I spotted them.
We ended up doing a daily head check the first week after treatment to make sure we got all the nits/eggs. Make sure you do the second treatment, that’s key to getting rid of them completely (and a third if you’re still seeing signs).
Both my kids had lice at different points and the rest of us never got them.
Thanks, all - we ended up going to a lice salon (and washing everything, vacuuming all surfaces, etc). Will do daily checks for nits too until the follow up appt next week.
Shave the head
No, this isn’t at all necessary and also won’t solve the problem.
You just need to either treat your child with a lice shampoo from the pharmacy (no home remedies please), or get a lice comb and comb REALLY well. Then comb again 10 days later. I would watch YouTube videos on either method to make sure you’re doing it right. If you spot lice on your child, then I would use the shampoo, but then I would comb only the rest of the family to see if you find any on anyone else. The shampoos work great, but some of them do smell a bit weird.
Then you also need to wash bedding and towels too. It’s probably best to do this for the whole family at once. If you all spend a lot of time rolling around your furniture (where one person puts their head and then another person puts there’s later) then I would give it a quick vacuum.
