I'm planning to ask for a pay rise, but I'm also considering negotiating for reduced hours instead. I've been struggling to stay in front of the screen for long periods, and I feel that I would benefit from having more free time after work. Currently, I work from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. I'm unsure which option is better in the long run: a pay rise that looks good on paper or requesting more free time?

It depends on your position. If you're a junior I requested a reduction in hours and unfortunately it was perceived as being less invested in my career and resulted in fewer opportunities. If you're already established in your career this is less of an issue.

Additional Posts in Architecture Bowl

I’m 27 & going to go to back to college for my bachelors. I have worked in the legal field for about 8 years & I’m burnt out. After a lot of research an thought I am leaning towards either architecture or interior design. I wanted to ask some advice from anyone working as an architect or interior designer. How do you feel about the field? What are the stress levels like? Do you enjoy it? Are you working at firm or are you working independently? Any info helps! Thanks 😊

I’m curious to know if anyone has experience working part-time in architecture? I have been working for large international firms in NYC for the past 10 years. So I work all day every day. My evenings and often the weekends are all absorbed by work duties. Working part-time would allow me to find a better balance, and carve out space for side gigs and eventually start my own firm. Any recommendations?

Hi everyone, I’m an architectural designer (from Europe) with 1.5 yrs experience. I’m working for a practice in San Francisco, full-time from the office, getting 25 an hour. It is so expensive to live here, I am struggling to make things work. Is this a normal salary for someone of my experience or should I ask for a raise? I don’t want to be greedy but it’s so expensive out here… Thank you 🌈

Does anyone know if Dwell Design in DC is a good company to work for?

I recently moved to Dubai after getting married. I am still continuing my last job but eventually I'll hv to find a new opportunity here. I am from architecture background and wud like if someone who could help me with a referral. As far as my capabilities are concerned, I hv personally loved teaching and managing projects cz I am able to connect with my team/students and get the job done. So it'll be great if someone would want to give me a chance for who I am personally and not just on paper
