Unfortunately a lot of partners are like this. A lot of it has to do with control over the client relationship because that is the real power at the equity level. If another attorney begins developing a direct relationship with the client then that could threaten the partner’s origination credit or ability to take the client with them to another firm if they feel like they are under compensated.
I had that happen. Dude insisted on covering all but one of the depositions and writing the summary judgment brief himself, even though I was very seasoned with first- and second-chairmen experience and had a strong reputation as a writer. He got stretched way too thin and screwed everything up, of course, then tried to blame me when the case went sideways.
